In general these companies use a recovery set that is created for that particular model but uses a generic OEM key so you dont have to enter it.

Right now, Ive got the old disk plugged into another computer using via USB enclosure, and it works for a while before dying, so im slowly copying files from it. Load Registry From External Drive Install Will DoThe files need to be replaced and the destination boot drive needs to change, re-install will do it, but repiar will not. I remember that one hard drive had the boot loader, and it was on a very small partition. The second drive had no such partition, so fixing the boot loader was not an easy task. Im not sure what your situation is, but if this is a scenario where you had a failure, and are actually trying to recover the data. Get a new hard drive, and do a fresh install of Windows, and recover the data off the drive. Because you dont want to be messing around with the only good working drive you have. IMHO, the best thing to do with desktops in this situation is to just have a backup hard drive. Because I think you are actually more likely to have a case of user error, or have something go wrong at the OS level than you are to have an actual hard drive failure. IMHO, having last nights backup is better than having two copies of the same user-error screw up. If they didnt come with the laptop this is something that should have been created on day 1 from the inbuilt utility. Will ordering the recovery disks from HP cost anything Id like to get this finished today and for free. ![]() As long as it detects HP branding in the mobo, it installs with the OEM license. If its personally owned, the individual is responsible for having all their documentation and recovery media ahead of time. If they dont, they can go buy a Windows license for 100 on Newegg. I dont know how much youre charging for all this research to dig the old one out of the hard drive, but at some point its going to be cheaper for the customer to just buy another license and not lose it this time.
